Work yesterday and today on 'The Impossible Hopes Of Sisyphus'. This was to be a small painting, a mere 40x30cm or less, as I thought the idea slight, but when working on it started to like the idea and saw more of an epic scale, so it's become one of my largest paintings at 109cm wide.
Due to the scale, I've used an involved and time consuming process of scaling up the 4cm idea sketch to a 1/3rd mock-up, then scaling that up using lots of A4 tracing sheets to the final drawing size, actually on the verso of the Lyceum Centenary painting from 2011.
There are numerous figures, each a different time snapshot of eternity. The visual themes are the boulders and scythes, for death and time (Kronos). The painting is ultimately about stoicism and the Sisyphean existentialism, the emotion melancholic, grave, accepting the eternity of work.
